The IR Question Nobody Asks: Are You the Right Spokesperson?

In investor relations, who delivers the message matters almost as much as the message itself.

Too often, companies assume the CEO should always be front and center. Sometimes that’s true. But not always.

I’ve worked with visionary CEOs who couldn’t explain a balance sheet if their lives depended on it — and finance leads who were brilliant communicators but rarely put on stage.

Here’s the test:

  • Does your lead communicator inspire confidence?

  • Do they understand the investor mindset and language?

  • Can they adjust the message on the fly — or do they just read from a script?

If the answer to any of those is no, it’s time to rethink who speaks for the company in key investor settings.

This isn’t about ego. It’s about capital. The best companies are willing to shift roles in service of the bigger picture — building trust, clarity, and long-term shareholder value.

You don’t get a second chance to earn credibility. Let’s make sure the right person has the mic.
